The sport of air soft started in Japan during the late 1970s. In Japan it was illegal to own a firearm, but there was still a tremendous amount of interest in them. There was a company that started manufacturing spring-powered air soft replicas of firearms that fired 6 mm, plastic BBs. The neighboring countries Korea, Philippines, Taiwan also became interested in air soft guns in the late 1980s. Air soft did not start to become popular in North America and Europe until the mid 1990s.

The reason for the popularity and the attraction of these guns to this sport is that the guns are 1:1 scale replica of the actual firearms that fire 6 mm, round, plastic pellets commonly called BBs. They use compressed air to propel the BBs. The guns look, feel, weigh, and function much like the actual firearms. About the only way you can tell the air soft gun apart from a “real steel” firearm is the blazing orange tip and when you pull the trigger.
